Patagonia Men’s Drifter AC GTX Waterproof Hiking Shoe
Summary: An extremely rugged and versatile hiking shoe. Enough support for serious hiking.
Aggressive and light.
Patagonia’s Drifter AC GTX hiking shoe is a very aggressive all-purpose hiking shoe/cross trainer. Somewhat bulky for trail running on light trails, it’s thick sole and gripping treads make it perfect for those more challenging trails inundated with sharp rocks and snarling roots.
With a combined weight of 2.12 pounds per pair, these shoes are a bit heavy and bulky to be warn as a trail running shoe. That having been said, they make a perfect hiking shoe offering enough support, stability and grip for just about any outdoor endeavor. The large and gripping soles combined with snug fit provided by the rugged uppers help to prevent trip-ups and sloppy steps while making your way along the trails.
The uppers of the Drifter AC GTX hiking shoes scream tough. They combine nubuck leather with nylon mesh underlays for a very sturdy yet flexible feel. The fabric is a breathable waterproof Gore-Tex fabric which keep your feet dry and fresh feeling. The uppers are very solidly constructed, you’ll notice that Patagonia double stitched through every sea of the shoe. It is important to note that this is a fairly warm shoe and might not be ideal for long summer hikes through the desert.
The Sole and Midsole
The Vibram Trail Ecostep outsoles of these shoes are made of partially recycled rubber and provide for some really sick traction. They have these big knobby rubber chunks that seem to cling to just about any surface. The Patagonia Air Cushion and EVA midsoles offer great shock absorption and support. The Bi-Fit insole board is made of recycled polyurethane and provides for enhanced support, helping to distribute stability and pressure across the foot over difficult terrain.
Not only durable and comfortable, the Patagonia Drifter AC GTX hiking shoe is also a rather attractively designed shoe. If you are in the market for a comfortable yet beefy hiking shoe appropriate for all types of terrain then you should definitely pick up a pair of these.
